Owner & Business Manager
Virginia Shaw
Virginia, Betsy’s mother, taught English in several states before settling in Ohio in 1972. She studied anthropology and worked several years as office manager and registered securities rep for a discount brokerage firm in Akron. After raising her children, she served as a parent mentor in the Field Local School District, and currently volunteers as a parent surrogate for foster children with disabilities. In 2006 she bought an abandoned farm property and built Sand Hill Stable. Rehabilitating the soil, protecting the stream, utilizing solar power, and applying other "green" practices are her goals now.
Barn Manager
Elizabeth Shaw
(goes by Betsy)
Betsy was raised in Kent, Ohio. She attended Western Reserve Academy and Hiram College, where she took
pre-vet courses, expecting to become a large-animal/livestock vet. She tackled various projects at Hiram’s Biological Field Station and after graduation worked at a small animal veterinary clinic. However, once Sand Hill Stable was built, she realized that her long term dream of working full time with horses had already been achieved. Betsy began riding and acquiring horses in her early teens and especially enjoys eventing and trail riding. As barn manager, she lives on the property and also cares for the resident dogs, cats, goats, and an emu.
